Amsterdam, which is more than 700 years old, can be described as a living museum of a bygone age. The capital of The Netherlands is indeed famous for its historical attractions, for its collections of great art, for the distinctive colour and flavour of its old sections and for the eternal beauty of the centuries-old canals and the ancient patrician houses.

City and port connected to the North Sea, Amsterdam is also the economic and financial centre of the Netherlands and a very popular location for international business, where tradition persists alongside innovation. Amsterdam is a human scale capital compared with most national capitals and its intimate character is best reflected in the narrow, bustling streets of the old town, where much of the population still goes about its business. Although the city has a modern metro system, about one-fifth of the workforce still relies on the time-honoured bicycle for transportation.

The combination of cultural richness, accessibility, cosmopolitan character and the atmosphere of freedom and tolerance makes Amsterdam just unique!

Sustainable Venue
Our venue for 2023, the Hotel Okura, takes its environmental and sustainable impact seriously. The hotel management is committed to protecting the environment by using, for example, paperless check-in, featuring seasonal products on their menu and using biodegradable alternatives for cleaning and dish-washing. They are aiming to reduce their carbon footprint by reduction of energy consumption by adjusting their equipment, technical installations and operating methods to make them as efficient as possible, for example through generating their own energy through solar panels and a well for thermal energy storage. Their goals are shared by all their staff and suppliers with similar ambitions to take responsibility to positively impact the environment and society.

Sustainable City
The Dutch national colour may be orange, but the Netherlands’ sustainability initiatives prove that the country has thoroughly green ambitions. With its use of bicycles instead of cars, high recycling rates, many green spaces and ethical, eco-friendly restaurants, it's the perfect place to live and eat responsibly. Green cities strive in all areas to reduce their environmental impact and encourage citizens and visitors to adopt a sustainable lifestyle, just as this Dutch city aims to become the cleanest and most eco-friendly in the world.

Amsterdam's main airport, Schiphol, might be the busiest airport in the Netherlands, but there are many sustainable transport options for travelling to the city, e.g., by train – and once there, the options include cycling, walking, low-energy buses and trams, and not forgetting of course, canal boat. Amsterdam is colloquially referred to as the "Venice of the North", for its large number of canals, now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Dutch capital is considered one of the most multicultural cities in the world, with at least 177 nationalities represented.

Amsterdam's main attractions include the Rijksmuseum, the state museum with a vast collection of Dutch Golden Age art; the Van Gogh Museum; the Dam Square, where the Royal Palace of Amsterdam and former city hall (stadhuis) are located; the Amsterdam Museum; Stedelijk Museum, with modern art; Hermitage Amsterdam; the Concertgebouw concert hall; the Anne Frank House; the Heineken Experience; and the Natura Artis Magistra. The city is also well known for its nightlife and festival activity; with several of its nightclubs (Melkweg, Paradiso) among the world's most famous.

The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is considered the oldest "modern" securities market stock exchange in the world. Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters in the city, including the Philips conglomerate, AkzoNobel, Booking.com, TomTom, and ING. Many of the world's largest companies are based in Amsterdam or have established their European headquarters in the city, such as leading technology companies Uber, Netflix and Tesla.
